City, Beach or Countryside? Find Your Portugal Rhythm

Portugal is small enough that Lisbon, the Atlantic coast and the open Alentejo sit within an hour or two of one another, and different enough that choosing between them decides what kind of holiday you have. Here is the honest version of each.
The city, if you want to be among it
Lisbon rewards people who stay in it rather than visit it. Our four city houses are rooted in Lisbon's neighbourhoods, where mornings begin with coffee and long walks through the city — Belém by the river, Alvalade's avenues, Saldanha in the middle of everything.
Choose the city if your days are made of small decisions: which café, which tram, which of the three restaurants on the corner. Choose it if you want to be able to change your mind at four in the afternoon. And choose it if you are travelling in winter, because a city does not close.
Do not choose it if what you actually want is quiet. Lisbon is many good things and quiet is not reliably one of them.
The coast, if you want the day to be shaped by weather
Our two beach houses sit close to the Atlantic, where salt air, surf and sunset dinners shape the rhythm of the day. Pinha da Praia is in Colares, between Sintra's hills and the sea. Avenca da Praia is in Parede, on the line of coast running west from Lisbon.
Choose the coast if you want the day to be decided by the sea rather than by a plan — swim when it is calm, walk when it is not, eat late because the light lasted. It suits families and it suits anyone who works from a laptop and wants to close it at five and be in the water at ten past.
The Atlantic here is cold and it is honest about it. September is the best month and nobody believes us.
Houses with soul, where time slows down.
The countryside, if you want nothing to happen
The three Alentejo houses share one monte at São Bartolomeu da Serra, surrounded by the landscape of the Alentejo, where silence, nature and heritage invite guests to slow down.
Choose the countryside if you are travelling with people you actually want to spend time with, because the Alentejo gives you long meals and very little else to do. Choose it if you want to hear nothing at night. Casa Maputo goes furthest and has no wifi and no television at all.
Do not choose it if you need to be entertained, or if someone in the party will be restless by Tuesday. The Alentejo is not a place to rush, and it does not reward being hurried.
Still deciding?
A useful question: what do you want the first hour after breakfast to feel like? People who answer out the door and into it want the city. People who answer checking the sea want the coast. People who answer another coffee want the Alentejo.
If the answer is all three, they are close enough to do in one trip, and a week split between two of them is one of the better ways to see this country.
Nine houses across three settings, each with its own name and its own character rather than one look repeated. Photos, locations and availability for every house are on the site — start with whichever of the three you just recognised yourself in.
