Houses with Soul. Places to Arrive on Your Own Terms.

There are many places to stay.

Hotels. Apartments. Rooms that look identical no matter where you are.

Malas a Montes was created for something different.

For travelers who choose homes over hotels. For those who value freedom as much as comfort. For those who believe that where you stay becomes part of the journey itself.

We're not a hotel group. We're not a property management company.

We are a collection of houses with soul.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name Malas a Montes brings together two ideas.

The first is the simple act of packing your bags and setting off somewhere new.

The second comes from the Portuguese expression "a montes", a reference to the landscapes of the Alentejo and the traditional Monte Alentejano, where life moves a little slower and time feels less urgent.

Together, they represent a different way of travelling.

One built around pauses rather than schedules.

Around experiences rather than checklists.

Around the simple pleasure of arriving somewhere that feels real.

A Collection, Not a Portfolio

Every house in our collection has its own identity.

Its own name.

Its own story.

Its own personality.

Some are rooted in Lisbon's neighbourhoods, where mornings begin with coffee and long walks through the city.

Some sit close to the Atlantic, where salt air, surf and sunset dinners shape the rhythm of the day.

Others are surrounded by the landscape of the Alentejo, where silence, nature and heritage invite guests to slow down.

We don't believe in standardised experiences.

A house should feel connected to its surroundings.

It should reflect the people who stay there and the place where it belongs.

Independence, Not Absence

If there is one idea that defines Malas a Montes, it is this:

Independence, not absence.

Modern travellers want flexibility.

They don't want to coordinate arrival times. They don't want to wait for keys. They don't want their holiday to start with logistics.

They simply want to arrive.

Every Malas a Montes house offers self-check-in, allowing guests to begin their stay on their own terms.

But independence doesn't mean being alone.

We're still here.

To answer questions. To solve problems. To share recommendations. To help whenever needed.

Hospitality is not about more contact.

It's about better contact.

Designed for Modern Travellers

Our guests travel for many different reasons.

Some come to work remotely for a few weeks.

Others are looking for a family holiday with space to relax.

Some arrive with surfboards in the car.

Others come searching for a slower pace and a deeper connection with Portugal.

What they all have in common is a desire for places that feel personal.

Places that don't feel interchangeable.

Places that become part of the memory.

More Than a Place to Stay

The best journeys are rarely defined by attractions alone.

They're shaped by the mornings spent on a terrace.

The conversations around a dining table.

The quiet moments after a day of exploring.

The feeling of opening the door to a place that immediately feels like yours.

That's what we hope to offer.

Not simply accommodation.

But homes that help travellers experience Portugal more

deeply.

Welcome to Malas a Montes.

Houses with soul, where time slows down.
